Twelve Hours of Christmas

on the first hour of smokefree my country gave to me
a flight into black skies

on the second hour of smokefree my country gave to me
a seat in a carpet blue sky
high above sun drenched windows and smoky white clouds

on the third hour of smokefree my country gave to me
a tramp
lighting up in front of a black plaster wall
simple writing behind him read
“Post no Bills” as if he would have so many to post
has anyone told him of this Christmas gift at all
no just the simple pleasure of a cigarette
the warmth of a black stark wall
and of course no bills

on the fourth hour of smokefree my country gave to me
a girl with two green shoes
sitting on a step of red brick out side a shop
a book
and a look
and a cigarette
of course a cigarette

on the fifth hour of smokefree my country gave to me
five golden butts
no French sticks
no biking gloves
no more pine trees

on the sixth hour of smokefree my country gave to me
open windows
a bench in a café
in cuba street
no more Havana cigars
my first midnight espresso
smokefree

on the seventh hour of smokefree my country gave to me
a girls turning head
with a nicotine stained smile

on the eighth hour of smokefree my country gave to me
heavy drops from heavy skies
at the very moment
that first drop bounced from a grey pave stone
twelve people stamped out their butts and changed their lives

on the ninth hour of smokefree my country brought to me
god light
a shaft of silvery smoky haze on the harbour
blue on black on blue

on the tenth hour of smokefree my country gave to me
a taxi window
no longer half way down
and an asian man
understanding the legislation
not standing the regulation
I agree
He too wanted to be free
Like ahmed zaoui

on the eleventh hour of smokefree my country gave to me
an empty baggage trolley
following a yellow line
leaving alone on black ash felt
a solitary bag shining wet in the sun

on the twelfth hour of smokefree my country gave to me
12 smokers quitting
11 taxicabs
10 airport trolleys
9 black clouds
8 red bricks
6 smoky alcoves
5 golden butts
4 espressos
3 girls smiling
2 green shoes
and one black wall with write writing “POST NO BILLS”
